What's the answer to consumerism?

Read this quote today, thought I would throw it out to the people:

"Consumerism will not just magically disappear from its central place in our culture. It needs to be supplanted by something." - Amitai Etzioni

What is the "something"? Thoughts?

The answer is yes... but it requires community. Friends and neighbors in my community have reduced our shopping significantly over the last few years. We have a completely different mindset today.

What we do is split the costs of many items with friends and neighbors who need the same things. Often items are necessary but used only once a week or less. Why should everybody own the same things that they rarely use? Anyway, we use a kind of checkout system that works very well.

We also pool our money and buy bulk goods too and get a nice discount. We save lots of money, and reduce our clutter and waste in the process. Now I feel a bit strange buying things only for myself. :-)

Today, folks in my community lead better, simpler, greener, more cooperative, sustainable and social lives than we would have ever dreamed possible before. I document the transformation of my community in my new blog.

Answer: Don't be a Consumer become Consumed?! 1Timothy 6:6. Consider this idea,
Php 4:11-13 MSG Actually, I don't have a sense of needing anything personally. I've learned by now to be quite content whatever my circumstances. (13) Whatever I have, wherever I am, I can make it through anything in the One who makes me who I am.
